August Lodge and Baseball
Juan Orto
August Lodge and baseball have a great relationship. The lodge is located near Cooperstown, NY – The Home of Baseball. Baseball fans from around the country have stayed here. Entire teams have booked the lodge for their stays for games at some of the local playing fields.
Doubleday Field is the primary ballpark in Cooperstown. Although it used to be used for major league exhibition games, it’s still used for the Old Timers Game. It’s a beautiful venue – the quintessential intimate ballpark. Did you know that Doubleday Field was featured in the movie “A League of Their Own” (with Geena Davis and Tom Hanks)?
Doubleday is not the only field in town, though. Cooperstown Dreams Park (the home of the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournaments) hosts games all summer, as does Cooperstown All Star Village and Cooperstown Baseball World. These baseball camps are legendary among the youth baseball crowd worldwide.
August Lodge has had guests visiting all the parks, as well as many visiting other baseball attractions, such as The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. This award-winning museum is a draw for kids of all ages from all around the world. It’s part of any fan’s pilgrimage to Cooperstown.
But, as any local resident or previous visitor to Cooperstown can tell you, the town is more than baseball. It was founded by Judge William Cooper, who was the father of the famous author, James Fennimore Cooper. (You may recognize him as the author of the Leatherstocking stories, one of which was “Last of the Mohicans.”)
One of the great local attractions is the Fenimore Art Museum. It presents changing and permanent exhibitions of American Folk Art, North American Indian art and artifacts, Hudson River School and 19th-century genre paintings, and American photography.
The Farmer’s Museum is a wonderful working farm that harkens to America’s agrarian past. There are many authentic exhibits, such as a working smithy. The Cardiff Giant is housed here in a lovely exhibit. You can also ride the impressive Empire State Carousel here. It’s a carousel that is intricately carved with animals and famous people from New York State, finished in 1998.
Glimmerglass Opera is world renowned for the Glimmerglass Festival (featuring, among other events, “Aida” in the 2012 lineup).
Hyde Hall is a remarkable building and reminder of bygone times of English aristocracy in America. The building itself may be the finest example of neoclassic country mansions anywhere in America.
Brewery Ommegang is an authentic Belgian-style brewery, famous for its ales. It’s located in bucolic environs just outside of Cooperstown.
With all these great attractions, baseball still remains the main draw to the Cooperstown and the August Lodge. The August Lodge and baseball are inextricably connected.
If you are looking for a great choice for a place to stay during your baseball vacation, August Lodge and baseball, make a great combination. August Lodge is the best bet for your Cooperstown lodging experience.
